Confessions From The Recession Part 2

I went from sitting at a desk and going into the field on occasion to cleaning out toilets and picking up dirty diapers and used needles.

That was my transition into the foreclosure maintenance business. Granted, not every day was like that, but some days...

Ironically enough, my first lesson involved gaining access to the home. The first thing that I learned is that about 6 out of 10 people upon leaving their home for the final time leave something open. It could be window, a door (sometimes the front), the garage door, something.

When you can gain access in this way, life is good. For the other 4 times, I am here to help you with your learning curve.

The first home that I came to that was completely secure sent me into a tail spin. I had no lock picking skills. That credit card by the frame thing works only on really old houses. The screwdriver thing looks cool on television but again only works with really old doors. Your job is to get in, replace the locks and follow any other instructions as stated in the work order without doing any damage. How do you get in?

My initial sophisticated entry technique involved the use of a 4lb mini-sledge hammer. It turns out that the judicious application of said hammer upon the locks will eventually allow you access into the home. If you can create a bit of space between the lock and the door, then a broad chisel will let you do the rest.

This technique is equally effective on deadbolts and handsets, but it does have its drawbacks. Neighbors, upon seeing you hammering away at a lock are inclined to notify the police. Although you have paperwork to support what you are doing, you will definitely look like a first class idiot in the eyes of law enforcement. Even worse, you bend the mechanism inside the lock which can turn an entry into a two hour ordeal. There is a much easier way which I will share in part 3.
