Canada To Us: Documentation Required For Shipping

If you're doing business out of Canada, there is a good chance that one of the first

markets that you'll look to expand to in the United States is Minneapolis, due to its proximity to the northern border. As a result, you may find that a Minneapolis courier service that makes regular runs between Canada and that city to be a great resource when looking into establishing a regular shipping route for your company to that city. One area in particular that they may be able to help you with is the preparation of the documents which are required to ship between the two countries.

Realistically, making sure that all the documentation that you need for shipping between the two countries is properly prepared is not too large of a task. The documents that are required for every shipment are pretty basic, and your courier company should be well versed in making sure that they are sent with every shipment. The two basic documents that you're going to need to send with every single shipment are an invoice and a BOL. One of these is your responsibility; the other is the courier's.

The document which is going to be your responsibility is going to be the invoice. You should provide your courier company with a copy of the invoice for your goods which they can include with the complete documentation package which they will present at the border. However, you should also include another copy of the invoice inside the package itself for verification purposes. Even the smallest packages being sent to another country need to include an invoice.

The courier company is going to be responsible for ensuring that your shipment is accompanied by a valid bill of lading. This is basically the document that describes the movement of the goods, as opposed to the goods themselves. It should say when the packages were picked up and from where. It will also say where they are going and when they are expected to get there. The amount that was paid for shipping will also be marked down.

Sometimes there can be other documents that you need to send with certain types of shipments. This is usually a product of either the total value of your shipment, or of the nature of the goods that you are shipping. In either event, your courier company should be able to let you know if you need to include any extra paperwork with your shipment.
