Calvin Gruneck - There are some retirement options available to Baby Boomers that they might not of considered before now. This includes those people from western countries along with other Asian countries.
To retire in Thailand, you must be financially stable with a monthly income. Many people choose to retire in Thailand, because their retirement cash flow goes a lot further here than it does in their own country of origin. So this allows them to have better choices on the kind of life style they may wish to pursue. Many countries allow their citizens to receive their pension incomes in Thailand. American citizens are eligible to collect their Social Security while living in Thailand.
In general, most of the activities that would be available in your home country would be available here and many times at a fraction of the cost. If you like to gamble, the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore is just about a 2 hour flight away.
Health care in Thailand is top notch. Thailand is recognized as one of the most leading health centers for Medical Tourism in the world. "In 2005, nearly 1.3 million foreigners came to Thailand for medical treatment. The reason is world-class medical facilities & treatment at a fraction of that in the west." I have a friend from Japan and he has lived in Thailand for many years. He thought that he'd have to go back to Japan to take care of his 85 year old mother, because she didn't want to leave her friends. That changed, after he flew his mother to Thailand to see if she would like it. She is now living with him here in Thailand and they have a full-time nurse to be her care giver.
Thailand is a very wonderful, beautiful and spiritual country full of excitement & adventure. I have lived here for 22 years and the newness has still not worn-off. Happy trails to you.
