Business Help For The Creative Entrepreneur

Share: Being of an arty ilk, I know many creative types that spend their lives creating
masterpieces in their spare time, whilst they slave away at some menial job to earn a crust; but there has been one who broke the mould, because he decided to do something many artists rarely consider... get business help. Yes, rather than losing sleep and starving for his art, he decided that he would earn a living from it. Being a sculptor and someone who was practically minded, he developed solar powered stackable garden lights that could become a feature in any size garden, then he took his idea to where any determined entrepreneur would go... Dragon's Den.
The prime time TV show has been offering business help and advice since 2005, and is in fact based on a Japanese series that has been sold by the creators Sony all around the world. The programme shows contestant after contestant stand up and justify what is usually their life's passion in a bid to get financial backing from one of the judges for a share of the profits. It is usually an arena for the business minded who have a lack of funds to continue with their big idea, but occasionally, someone who has had a creative and ingenious idea turns up who needs more than just money, they need advice as well.
Loans form just one part of a successful business venture, and for those that are not au fais with the finer points of enterprise, business help also comes in the form of advice about pricing, manufacturing, marketing and trading. The Dragon's Den panel have a wealth of experience in a range of different industries, but even if they are presented with an idea that is outside their usual remit, they can often feel a spark of that special entrepreneurial something and offer to back an idea. When my friend appeared on the show he was both humble and passionate and admitted that he needed business help.
What many contestants of the show forget is that the process in Dragon's Den is a two-way affair. The panel have enough money to invest to make more money, but they need something to invest in. It is these business people that need the creative input and tangible goods and services of those who have dedicated their lives to a craft to create something that people want, in lieu of earning huge amounts of cash. Without the creative types to inspire them and to invest in, there would be no business help they could offer, and no profits to be made.
