The website has come a long way from being a fancy indulgence to being a business
card for people to today when most businesses are driven by the website itself. Whatever business you are in, a website today is not an option to consider, but a compulsory thing to have. The main thing you need when starting a website is a domain name. Though it sounds like a simple thing to do, one should be a little careful about the domain name.
Given below are a few tips to select a good domain name :
* While registering the domain name, it would make sense to book all the extensions that are available for your domain name in order to prevent any one else from registering it for themselves. This will prevent another company with the same domain name but different extension to become more popular and become compition to your business.
* Do not use a domain name that defines your business too narrowly. If in the future you decide to do venture into a new business besides your current business, then you will not be able to use the current domain name.
* Try and keep the domain name short. This makes it easier to recall and the chances of anyone misspelling it is also less.
* As far as possible try and avoid using hyphens or use them only when necessary. It is easier to say and remember a domain name without a hyphen than one with a hyphen.
* It is not very important to have a keyword in the domain name. Domain names without a keyword can also do as well a domain name with a keyword.
* Know what you can and cannot use in the domain name. You can use letters, numbers and dashes (hyphens) in your business domain name. You cannot use a space between words and you cannot use special characters like $, %, #, etc. You can use both capitals as domain names are not case sensitive.
* As far as possible avoid using a domain name that contains a brand name. People can misunderstand it to belong to that brand.
* Keep the website up to date with any changes whatsoever being made from time to time.
