Business 101: A Little Recognition Goes A Long Way

Do you remember the thrill of winning a trophy

, or award as child? How great did it feel to be recognized and praised for your achievements? It was amazing. And that trophy was like magic. Each time you looked at it, no matter what was wrong in the world; you could not help but feel just a little bit better.

In today's fast-paced business world, where it's sometimes seemingly impossible to squeeze in a coffee break, we tend to forget the simple lessons of our youth. This is especially true in situations where there is stress and general unrest due to downsizing and pay freezes (or worse yet, pay cuts) or difficult work environments or clients. In other words, we need appreciation more than ever, but give and receive it less often than we have in the past.

Ok, so maybe we are not children anymore but we still need to feel appreciated. And if you are not getting all the warm fuzzies from the paycheck alone, a little something extra might be called for, like an award. It does not have to be a big or expensive prize but some form of recognition is always appreciated and can often fill the void that monetary bonuses once did.

So what kinds of awards are talking about? Any kind really. It could be as simple as a printed certificate of appreciation or as robust as an engraved corporate award. It does not need to cost a lot or be big and shiny. It just needs to convey a feeling of appreciation. Here are a few ideas:

Custom laser engraved bamboo flash drive (cost about $20)

5 inch by 7 inch standing smoked glass plaque (cost about $16)

5 inch by 7 inch standing Arrow or Diamond shaped glass plaque (cost about $14)

Custom laser engraved solid maple or cherry hardwood business card holder (cost about $10)

Custom printed certificate of appreciation with watermark and raised seal (cost about $4)

As you can see, there is something for every budget. And you do not need to spend a lot. Just be sure to provide something with genuine appreciation and you will be amazed at the great feelings it generates. You could even buy a stack of very nice certificates from a local specialty paper store or office supply shop and print the names on a laser printer or provide coffee and muffins for a week. Genuine appreciation is always appreciated.

But this can be a double-edged sword. Don't detract from the gesture by sending out generic mass-produced "awards" to everyone. Make each one special to make the recipient feel special. If you want to do something to show your appreciation for everyone, have lunch catered or offer free concert tickets and sporting event tickets. That's just as nice as an award when it comes to showing mass appreciation.

You can also give a department a departmental award that gives all members bragging rights. Take five minutes and think about it. With a few dollars and bit of imagination you can spread some office cheer.
