Building your business online

Building your own business online is something that most business owners (who haven't already done so) will have to take into consideration

. While there are still numerous businesses that seem to operate and do quite well via word of mouth, the fact of the matter is that businesses today are expected to reach a much bigger audience once they have established an online presence. If you look at most online businesses, you will notice that many already have someone in their marketing department who is hard at work making sure that they have an online presence in various social networks, etc. However, not all online networks are created equal. While Twitter may be a universal draw for most businesses, other social networking sites such as Mixx, Digg, StumbleUpon and others may not have the same impact on various businesses. For instance, while one client may see the benefit of utilizing a website such as StumbleUpon (which is notorious for drawing hundreds upon thousands of viewers in a single sitting), many of the visitors from this site won't bother sticking around for a second look at a particular website. Part of this has to do with the actual website and part of it has to do with the fact that the content is simply not there. In order to establish a solid online presence for your business, you must first take a hard look at several elements: your website design and layout, your content and your niche market. Web design will be the major factor right out of the starting gates. For instance, you could have great content on your website, but if you are forcing viewers to look at graphics or color schemes that are hard on their eyes, they won't bother sticking around. It would be worth your time and money to invest in someone who really knows web design and who can cater to the kind of feel that you want your business to have. He or she will have an understanding of who your niche market is as well as what sorts of things will appeal to that particular market. Someone who is a fashion designer will no doubt have a completely different web design than someone who sells cars.

After you've figured out the design element, it is time to implement your content. Content, no matter what the business should be clean, crisp and to the point. People aren't stupid; they can tell when you are starting to ramble. Therefore, stay within the boundaries of what you are discussing at hand. Content should be well thought out and researched as well as proofread for an error-free viewing.
