Boston Celtics Tickets - 2010-11 Season Preview
Just when it looked like Father Time had caught up to the aging Celtics last season
, this group got their act together in the postseason and came within one game of winning another NBA Championship. Boston Celtics tickets should be a popular item in 2010-11, but will this team be able to overcome their tired legs once again?
The core of this Celtics team is no longer their Big Three; it's their Big Four. In fact, there's a good chance that point guard Rajon Rondo is now the team's best player. Rondo is a unique talent that can make things happen on the floor, for himself and for others. He's the engine that makes this offense go and without him the Celtics don't stand a chance. Rondo put up some truly huge postseason performances last season, especially against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He's a triple-double threat on a nightly basis, but isn't without his warts.
Rondo's shooting woes have been well documented, and they'll continue to haunt him unless he improves his stroke. Defenders are often able to neutralize his blazing speed and ultra-quick first step because they don't have to respect his outside shot. Still, Rondo remains an integral piece of the Celtic's puzzle.
The aging trio of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce showed that they still have something left in the tank with a phenomenal postseason run last year, but they also showed that they'll struggle with game-to-game consistency throughout the arduous regular season schedule. Both Garnett and Pierce missed significant time last season, which may have accounted for their seemingly fresh legs in the playoffs. Allen seems to be defying the aging process the best of the three, but he's also the least important to the team's success and experienced some uncharacteristic shooting slumps last season.
The team can't expect major production from these guys over an 82-game season anymore, but that didn't stop the organization from inking both Pierce and Allen to new contracts. Those deals might extend the team's title hopes for another year or two, but they could also become major financial burdens in the future.
Starting center Kendrick Perkins doesn't look like he'll be ready for the start of the season after suffering a knee injury in the NBA Finals, which definitely hurts. The Celtics looked to remedy this issue by bringing in a pair of aging O'Neals, as in Shaquille and Jermaine. Both players are shells of their former selves, but could be valuable in filling the Celtics' lack of size, especially with Perkins sidelined. Shaq's craving for one more ring is getting a bit played out, but Jermaine O'Neal is still a decent big man.
Aside from the health of the team's older stars, bench play could be the biggest determinant of Boston's success this season. Nate Robinson excelled as an offensive sparkplug off the bench in the postseason, as did power forward Glen Davis. Though both players consistently show signs of immaturity, they're also extremely skilled. Davis' skill set makes him a real offensive threat on the block and he's found ways to overcome his lack of athleticism and lift. Rookie Avery Bradley could also figure into the Celtics' rotation this season.
Bradley is a defensive ace and has the ability to knock down perimeter shots. He needs to work on his playmaking abilities, but he's the closest thing to a genuine backup point guard that the team has on the roster. If the bench can perform consistently over the course of the season, the Celtics could sneak into the top half of the playoff teams in the East, but we now know to wait until the playoffs to fully judge this team.
