BlazBlue Continuum Shift Review: A Welcome Entry to the Already Successful Series
Last year's Calamity Trigger made quite a splash on fighting games and addressed many concerns that players had with current generation fighters
. However, Continuum Shift takes the things that Calamity Trigger did well and exceeds gamers' expectations for a solid fighting entry into the series. A new roster of varied characters, great mechanics and awesome visuals make this game a good value for the money and a nice addition to any fighting gamers' library.
Platform: PS3
Publisher: Aksys Games
Genre: Fighting
ESRB Rating: Teen
Release Date: 07/27/2010
Graphics: 9.0 / 10.0
The character design in Continuum Shift is great with flashy graphics and a fine attention to detail that is hard to beat. Each character uses their own set of moves with different animations and some special moves make it hard not to sit back and take in the color palette. Sometimes the animation can be a little iffy but it is very difficult to program sprites in the same way as you would program 3D models.
Game Play: 8.0 / 10.0
If you have previously played Calamity Trigger, you should have no problem picking up the controls of Continuum Shift. Each character is capable of a strong, medium and weak attack as well as a drive attack that is specific to the character that you choose. This makes each character play completely differently and begins to eliminate the button mashing problem that plagues many fighting games.
View images hereStory: 10.0 / 10.0
You wouldn't normally expect that much of a story out of a fighting game. However, the story mode in Continuum Shift takes characters on branching paths and allows for an immersive and interesting story that adds to the enjoyment of the game. Each character is developed properly and leaves you actually caring about whether a specific character succeeds in each fight - a great achievement common in the BlazBlue series.
Music: 8.0 / 10.0
The music is primarily characterized by wild guitar music blended with dramatic vocals and orchestral music. This adds to the fast paced game play while not detracting from the overall environment or overpowering the other sounds of the game.
Replay Value: 8.0 / 10.0
Much of the replay value of Continuum Shift comes in the form of multiple play modes and, of course, multiplayer capabilities. New characters and exciting, fast paced combat make the game a pleasure to play over many other current fighting games and will likely give you much more than just a weekend of entertainment. While players new to the series can enjoy the excellent training mode to hone their skills before battle, veterans of the series will have no problem jumping right in and taking any of the mode challenges that Continuum Shift has to offer.
Overall Rating: 9.0 / 10.0
While Continuum Shift borrows a great deal of game play aspects from Calamity Trigger, there is a lot to enjoy about Continuum Shift and many new features make the game a blast to play. If you have no experience with the series, you will be well served by picking up this game over any of the other entries as it properly builds on older successes and adds a few of its own.
