Battlefield: Bad Company Review - Breaking Down Barriers

Battlefield: Bad Company tells the story of four United States soldiers

, who are fighting militants in Eastern Europe. The hard-nosed and (at times) rash behavior of these soldiers is what gives them the name, "Bad Company," and they certainly live up to their name. You, the player, is the new guy in this group and will narrate the story.

After the introductions and some basic missions, you and the boys find yourself at a crossroad. The enemy army is taking help from mercenaries - and not just ordinary mercenaries, but elites, who are being paid in gold bars! Our group has to choose between obeying orders or chasing the gold, and you can guess which of the two they choose.

The gameplay in Battlefield: Bad Company is mostly basic FPS style with a few additions. There are special weapons for calling in air strikes and such, but there is nothing here that hasn't been done before elswhere. One interesting addition to the gameplay, however, is the ability to knock down walls, crash in roofs, and break through doors. This feature, combined with the high levels of environment destructibility, makes Battlefield: Bad Company an explosive package of non-stop action.

The online multiplayer game is composed of two modes: Attackers and Defenders and Capture the Flag. Attackers and Defenders has attackers destroying the gold crates of the defenders, two at a time. Capture the Flag has two teams competing for control of five points each marked with flagpole. The destructibility of environments described above create long interesting matches, since there are literally no places hide! The maps are massive and well-detailed, making it feel as though you are right in the middle of a war zone.

The only large gripe I have with the game was that the story mode was too easy. You have an unlimited amount of medicine syringes that you can use to replenish your health. So, as long as you have enough patience and persistence, you theoretically should never die or lose. Don't be alarmed in the case you do die, because you will start at the previous checkpoint that you passed - which is quite the time-saver. There are numerous checkpoints in the game, possibly for players who may struggle along the way. In other words, if you play any level on any difficulty long enough you should beat it.

In conclusion, I thought the game was great. The storyline was relatively engaging for an FPS and the tone made it feel unique. The multiplayer mode will give you hours of extra gameplay, long after the story mode is over. The (addictive) ability to bust down just about any wall, tree or barrier is just so entertaining that it might get you doing it all over the place. I loved the music as well. It adds a catchy cowboy-like tone to the game, which is fitting with the theme and story.

Overall, I would give this game an 8 out of 10.
