Authenticated SMTP A Brief Review
SMTP authentication is popularly known by its abbreviated format, SMTP AUTH. An Authenticated SMTP allows a client to log in from anywhere with help of the SMTP server supported authentication mechanism. In reality, such mechanism is an extension of Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.
The original SMTP, conceived by Jon Postel in the 70s did not require the users to input any password to send email messages. Such a facility paved the way for open mail relays and existed until the problem emerged in the late 90s. Prior to the inception of authenticated SMTP, IP address was used to identify a relay client. It was a practical concept especially in the caess where the same ISP provided the email services along with the connection. The idea of authenticated SMTP, devised by John Gardiner Myers, was published in 1995 followed by successive discussions leading to much improved authenticated SMTP.
Use of a submission agent, known to be MSA is an indication that the authenticated SMTP .MSA is supported by the majority of the software. MSA is generally used on the port 587. Its use has turned out to be fruitful in supporting the nomadic users. The tendency to block the port 25 or use the SMTP proxies by several network hubs can be completely eradicated with help of MSA use. MSA plays an active role in ensuring that the envelope of every message has a good address. Apart from this service, MSA is also responsible for enforcing the local policies for the 'From' header. Some clients thoroughly check the messages immediately after they are received by authenticated SMTP.
The entire process of getting authentication is a complex one. There exists a prominent distinction between authorization and authentication. I am coming to that a little later. It is possible to use authenticated SMTP on port 25. Apart from AUTH command, an AUTH parameter is also provided by the extension to make differences between authorization and authentication. This feature helps a sender identify himself and send numerous messages during the same session. Authentication remains the same but authorization varies while sending different messages as per as different agreements. The email senders often feel curious to know what a free SMTP server is. It refers to a Window-based server program that allows the mail senders to directly send the mails from their computers. Such feature is of immense benefit especially for those traveling a lot with their laptops. The free SMTP server allows the travelers' PCs to establish connection with distinct ISPs in different countries. This way the users can also experience an increased level of privacy and security. This server supports all the email programs but provides the best service while working with Outlook Express. It is a very simple and straightforward method to connect a user's current email program with the server. The user is only required to use a word 'localhost' instead of using the current SMTP host. A server of free SMTP type operates very fast and sets up dozens of SMTP connections in order to make the most of the internet connection.
