A Look At The History Of Kopi Luwak

You may have heard news reports about a rare and delicious coffee produced by small Asian mammals

. Kopi luwak is coffee which is produced by roasting the partially digested beans civets pass through their system. In fact, the name kopi luwak literally translates as civet coffee.

Kopi luwak coffee is created when the beans of one or more varieties of coffee pass through the digestive tract of the luwak or civet. Civets are mammals which live in certain areas of Asia including Sumatra, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries as well. The creatures are drawn to the bright red, ripe coffee beans which they love to feast on. The kopi luwak is created when the outer fruit has been digested and the beans inside are passed through the digestive tract.

The kopi luwak beans are separated, washed, and prepared for roasting. The wonderful thing about kopi luwak is that the civets prefer to feast on the ripest beans which have the best flavor and this naturally ensures that the source beans are of the highest quality. The fact that this coffee has little to no bitterness is another reason why it is so popular among gourmands who want rich flavor in beans which are only lightly roasted.

Kopi luwak coffee is very rare and therefore very expensive. Its rarity comes from the fact that the digested beans were, at times, very difficult to locate. Original methods of obtaining raw kopi luwak coffee included looking for communal areas where the civets would live. Now, however, as farming methods are refined, the civets are allowed to roam within more controlled areas and kopi luwak coffee beans are easier to locate. Even though it is easier to find a consistent source of civet coffee beans, the problem is that only a small amount is still available to meet world-wide demand.

In fact, both coffee lovers and people who love exotic and unusual foods have been the force behind ensuring the popularity of kopi luwak coffee. It began to be sold most often in Japan and in the United States as well. Its extremely high price (often as much as $100 a cup) has given it a reputation as being an extremely decadent and indulgent luxury. The fact is that the taste, for many coffee lovers, is worth more than the exorbitant price tag of kopi luwak coffee.

Kopi luwak coffee is available in several different bean varieties. Depending on where the kopi luwak coffee has been collected, it may contain Arabica beans, Robusta beans or even Liberica beans. There is one species of civet which prefers Liberica beans above all others. The planting of larger numbers of Liberica bean plants has permitted this variety of kopi luwak coffee to be more readily available.

Finding a good source of kopi luwak is becoming less difficult. There are different blends available that not only include more than one type of kopi luwak coffee bean, but also civet coffee beans mixed with regular coffee beans as well. The future may hold great things for this coffee as it becomes easier to produce, prepare and purchase.
