5 Tips For Creating A Good Business Card
Share: This article will provide some tips for improving the quality of your business cards
, and the impact that they will have on your business. Consider these tips in order to turn your business cards from pieces of paper that are simply a waste of space in someone's rolodex, into something that actually helps to generate more business.
1.) The Basics
The basics include the name of the individual, the name of the business, the address of the business, phone numbers, and business hours, if applicable. Email address contact information is often a good idea as well. For a clean look, have all of these elements located in the same area of the business card. For a clean, professional look, avoid using more than 1 or 2 colors for the basic elements. A mistake that makes business cards look tacky is to use too many colors in one place.
2.) Include Your Website
If you don't have a website for your business, creating one can be inexpensive and straightforward, depending on your level of technical skill. Having a website adds a level of professionalism in today's modern digital age. If you do have a website, be sure to add this to your business card. Many people who did not grow up in the digital age, and are not as aware of the role that the internet plays, may simply overlook this factor. Don't make this mistake.
3.) Don't Overuse Color
For a clean, professional look, stick to using 1 or 2 colors, and avoid using multiple bright, flashy colors. Too much color can be distracting from other elements such as text, can subtly strain some people's eyes, and can be subconsciously repulsive. For most business cards, color should not be attention-grabbing; it should be in the background.
Instead of having people's eyes drawn to the color, it should be draw to text, such as your business' tagline. If a person is glancing through business cards, and they will only be looking at your card for a second or so, what is the first thing that you want them to notice? Most likely, you want them to notice something that makes them remember your business, and what it offers.
4.) Use A Tagline
Many business names are vague and ambiguous, and do not do a good job at conveying the services or products that the business offers. When a person sees your business card, you want them to immediately know what services your business provides after a quick glance at the tagline. Focus on a simple tagline that conveys the key benefits and services of your business. Don't focus on creating something clever or catchy; youre not trying to build brand recognition a la Madison Avenue style. The goal is to convey what your business is all about in a single line.
5.) Make Use Of Both Sides To Advertise Your Business
Many people leave the backs of their business cards blank, probably because that's how they see everyone else doing it. You business card should be more than merely a contact information card; it should be a miniature advertisement for your business. The tagline should convey the basics of what your business does. The back side can be used for bullet points which contain information about the benefits and features that your business offers.
When people are flipping through their business cards, they might be a potential customer for what your business offers, even if they aren't specifically thinking about it at that moment. Perhaps they are looking for something, but can't quite put a finger on it. Or perhaps they are looking for something else, but seeing your business card might cause them to remember something else if it designed properly. If your business does landscaping, seeing your card might cause the person to remember that they were planning on getting their lawn done, even if they were looking for their insurance agent.
If your card is a generic card that has only contact information, it will do nothing to trigger any response. The whole purpose of handing out business cards is to advertise your business whenever someone happens to glance at the card. Don't crowd the back of the business card with a wall of text. Use a few, neatly spaced bullet points that convey the most important benefits and features of your business.
