I bought a used washer at a thrift store for $12.50

. It is still running three years later. It is a Whirlpool commercial type that is used at the coin laundry, and the donor reset the coin mechanism so it pushes in without coins and starts. He donated 8 of them so I bought one. When I got home with it I connected a garden hose and an extension cord to it outside and put some clothes and detergent in it and ran it to make sure it didnt have any leaks in the fill tubes or the drain tube outside, since cleanup inside would be an enormous mess. I ran it 4 or 5 times and it was dry at all the connections and underneath, so I moved it indoors and havent had any problems, yet knock on wood.

I dont know how long you consider long. My wife and I went on a seven week drive across country and had no problems using our front-loader when we got back. Of course, it got blowed up by a far too close lightning strike a couple of months later, but thats another story.

If you have a front-loader, a lot would depend on whether you let it dry properly after you use it. When you finish your weekly (or whenever) laundry, you should leave the door open for a couple of days to let it dry. If youve done that routinely before you went on your long break, then I would see no problem with using it immediately upon your return.

If you have a top-loader, as Rakesh Yata pointed out four years prior, you might want to give it a good wipe-down with a damp washcloth. With most top-loaders, the lid does not form a tight seal and they would be likely to accumulate some dust. It could also be argued that this is irrelevant because the wash cycle is going to go through multiple changes of water, so it doesnt really matter.

Honestly, I dont think that I would worry about it. I would probably give it a visible inspection before throwing dirty clothes into it to make sure that it hadnt become a mouse habitat, then just get on with doing my laundry. If youre really concerned, email the manufacturer and ask them.

I unplug any electrical appliance that I am not using at that time. Washers and dryers may be a little tricky; hard to reach. I wish I can get to those outlets, but no I can't and yes, I still do see the savings on my electrical bill. Lamps, toaster, blender, microwave, TV in an unused bedroom. It takes a little practice to get into the habit of remembering to unplug your microwave and lamps when you're not in that room and needing them consistently, but try it. It saves me more than $50 to $90 per month. Yes, I would unplug it when I'm not using it. Try an experiment; when you get your next bill or check when your billing dates. On the first day of the beginning of your billing date unplug everything you're not using. Check your next bill and see what the difference is-- it can't hurt. If you're not sure, do it again for another month and check back 3 months previously to see what the difference is. I guarantee you, you will appreciate it.
