subject: Are You Saving Enough Money? [print this page] How often do you manage to avoid the temptation to spend more money than you know you can really afford?
We all fall foul of our temptations now and then, and once in a while it is fine to do this. But it should be tempered with the regular habit of saving money as well, so we can set ourselves up more securely for the future.
There are lots of different ways to save money in our daily lives too. If you are not used to saving money on a regular basis the easiest way to begin is by making some small changes. Not only will you barely notice them, you will also start to see the savings piling up fairly quickly.
A good example would be to give up the coffee you get every morning from the local coffee shop on the way in to work. Why not grab a takeaway from home instead? You could purchase a lidded mug especially for this purpose and then start saving money every day. Pop the change you would have spent into a jar of some kind and watch it add up. It works best if the jar is made from glass, so you can see how much you can save and how quickly you can do it.
Other ways to save money are less noticeable but just as good. Set up a direct debit from your bank account just after you get paid each month, for example. Funnel a specific amount of money from there into your savings and you won't even notice it is gone. You will soon notice how your savings will start to swell though.
Try and make other savings by reducing your bills down as much as possible too. It is always easier to save 100 in ten 10 instalments rather than trying to save 100 all in one hit in one area of your life. Try applying this technique to see if you can put more away each month than you may initially think is possible. You will soon see the results of all your small savings adding up to make a big difference.
It is important to recognise that some savings won't be worth making though. For instance you could try and save money by not going to the dentist every six months. This might seem to be a good saving but it could lead you to pay more in the long run for more treatment than you would have needed otherwise.
In addition to this it is possible you could claim back health cost for visits like this if you have good health cover. Unlike some other things you could buy, this is always worth the money.
