The state of Kerala was created on November 1, 1956 when Malabar District was merged with Tranvancore-Cochin state and Kasargod taluk of South Kanara District. Kanyakumari was given over to Tamil Nadu, based on the recommendations of the State Re-organization Commission set up by the Government of India. And thus Kerala, as we see it today, was born.
