Summer Days Are Here!

Summer time is upon usSummer time is upon us. As the long summer days heat up, we will soon be turning on Utah air conditioning units. If we want to keep our energy costs down, here are some things that will help.

We already know we should change our air filters regularly for the best air flow. Do we also know we should clean our condenser coils too? Cleaning the condenser is an easy, yet important task to do throughout the summer.

To clean the coils, all you need is a garden hose. First remove any leaves or debris that has collected over the winter, and then spray off all the dust and dirt using your garden hose. Keeping the coils clean improves their efficiency.

Other maintenance items such as checking the refrigerant level and adjusting the blower components would be better left to Utah air conditioning experts. They will also check all the controls for the different cycles of your system to make sure all is in top working order. Keeping your unit running efficiently will save energy costs and help your unit last longer.

Another thing that will help reduce energy costs in both summer and winter is to make sure the ducts are properly sealed and insulated. If your ducts aren't sealed, you should wrap each joint with duct sealant or metal backed tape. Although you would think you should use duct tape, it isn't long lasting enough, so shouldn't be used.

Other maintenance items such as checking the refrigerant level and adjusting the blower components would be better left the to Utah air conditioning experts. They will also check the system settings for all the cycles to make sure all is in proper working order. Keeping your unit running at it's best will ensure better performance.

If you have an older unit that isn't working well, it may be time for a replacement. When you decide to get a new unit, replacing it with an Energy Star qualified unit will give you the best energy savings. Your Utah air conditioning contractor can help you select the right unit for your home.

When purchasing a new unit, remember that bigger is not always better. Frequent on/off cycling will occur if your unit is too large. This will reduce your comfort level and increase stress on the components. The size should be based on your home's heat gain/loss calculations which your Utah air conditioning contractor can provide you with.
