subject: Mbm Destroyit 2404 Shredder Review [print this page]

There is no better way to ensure the security of your confidential information than doing your own document shredding, on site and by hand. If you or any of your employees or co-workers handle sensitive information on a regular basis, you might wisely be searching for a desk side shredder. Here we will take a look at one of Destroyit's entries in the desk side shredder market, the 2404.

Advantages:

1.) One of the most important things you can look for in an office or Deskside shredder is safety, and we liked what we saw in the 2404. Destroyit's SPS, or Safety Protection System consists of a clear plastic guard that sits in the feed opening. It is also always plain to the user what the operational status of the machine is thanks to the backlit and color-coded control element. The 2404 has an automatic reverse and power cut-off function in case there is ever a paper jam. The power will also cut off automatically if the user opens the cabinet door and when the shred bag is full.

2.) The 2404 turns on and off automatically when you put paper in the feed. We thought this was a pretty handy feature. We found that this shredder easily handled paper clips, staples, and credit cards as well. The strip-cut version of the 2404 can also handle compact discs, and has a safety shield installed to ensure that no sharp plastic chards will fly from the opening when you are shredding them.

3.) When you are using a shredder in an office setting, one thing that you want to know before you buy is how loud the machine is going to be during typical operation. We thought that the 2404 was remarkably quiet, especially when you consider how powerful the motor is.

4.) A lot of shredders on the market are just shredder heads placed upon a cheap plastic trashcan. Like most of Destyoit's line, however, the 2404 has a solid wood cabinet. It has a sleek off-white appearance that is quite modern and "euro" in appearance. We liked the fact that someone payed attention to aesthetics when they designed this machine. We wish that other shredder manufacturers would do the same.

5.) We also liked the fact that the 2404 has wheels. Well, swivel casters that appear to be pretty rugged, anyway. Anyone who will need to move their shredder around the office will appreciate this feature.

Disadvantages:

1.) In order to get the compact disc shredding capability, you must purchase the 2404 in the strip cut version. We are not sure that this is a good tradeoff, as we much prefer the added security of cross cut shredders.

2.) Though we want to stress that the 2404 never overheated while we were testing it out, it is not a machine that is rated for continuous use, and the user will need to learn how long the shredder can be used before it requires a cooling-off period. However, this is typical for most lower priced machines on the market.
