subject: Formax Fd 8600cc Cross - Cut Shredder Review [print this page]

Strengths:
Strengths:

1.) The FD 8600CC gives you what is classified as level 3 security shredding. What this means is that it shreds paper into a cross cut pattern that has been deemed secure enough of the destruction of the confidential information that your business handles every day. Specifically, this concerns the types of information that, in the wrong hands, might lead to ID theft or other types of consumer fraud. The federal government enacted some regulations in 2005 known as FACTA laws that require businesses to discard documents at a level 3 (or higher) security, and failure to comply can lead to fines and litigation. The FD 8600CC is a great way to keep your business and your information out of harm's way.

2.) The FD 8600CC has a well-powered motor that operates at 20 feet per minute, and offers a capacity of 28 sheets of paper per pass. The solid steel cutting heads (which are under lifetime warranty) easily handled paper clips, staples and credit cards. Another of the FD 8600CC's nice touches (and one that we'd like to see more shredders incorporate) is the wide sixteen inch feed opening. This means that you can not only easily shred letter and legal sheets, but larger green bar computer paper can be easily accommodated as well.

3.) One of the things we like to see in a multi-user office machine is ease of use, and the FD 8600CC truly excels in this regard. The control panel is simple to understand, well-illuminated, and large. It will not only let you choose the operational mode (auto start/stop or manual) but there is also an extremely helpful load indicator that will help the user stay within the sheet capacity of the machine. All in all, this is one of the most easy to operate shredders we have seen.

4.) Another thing we look for in a centralized machine is how easy it is to maintain, and again, the FD 8600CC impresses. There is an auto cleaning function that runs the cutting heads in reverse in order to keep them clear of shred particles, and an indicator light letting you know when the heads need to be lubricated. There is also an optional self oiling system you can get to go with your FD 8600CC which makes the process all the more simple and hassle-free. Most impressive, however, is the on-board system that records usage info and can display it for technicians to make service calls easier.

5.) Safety is always something to consider in a shredder, and the FD 8600CC delivers here as well. There is automatic shutoff when the bin door is open or the waste receptacle is full, and an auto reverse function helps prevent paper jams. There is also a circuit breaker to keep electrical problems at bay.

Weaknesses:

1.) Though we didn't run into any problems whatsoever, it is unclear as to whether the FD 8600CC is a machine that is designed for continuous use. It does have thermal protection, but that simply means that it will turn itself off for a requisite cooling period if the motor is in danger of overheating.
