subject: Reviewing The Gbc Shredmaster Gdm10 Paper Shredder [print this page]

The GBC ShredMaster GDM10 paper shredder is a machine that offers a really great amount of security, as well as a handful of user-friendly features. However, this product also has a couple of weaknesses that might be off-putting. Here are all the strengths and weaknesses of the GDM10 so you can learn all about this device and determine if this product is the right one for your office.

Strengths:

* The GDM10 has a good shredding capacity of 10 sheets per pass. It will also take care of unwanted credit/debit cards and paper fasteners such as staples. It has a top shredding speed of 16 feet per minute.

* One of the best things about the GDM10 is how much security it offers. This is a micro-cut machine that will turn your documents into little pieces that measure 3/32" x 19/32". This gives the device a Level 4 security rating, the third highest rating currently available.

* The waste compartment can store up to 13 gallons of waste before it needs to be emptied. This large capacity makes the GDM10 ideal for use by multiple people (up to 10) because the bag won't need to be emptied all the time.

* The GDM10 has a couple of anti-jam features to make operation simple and trouble-free. For one, the machine's throat will turn red if too much paper is inserted. There's also an automatic reverse mode that can be utilized, if necessary.

* This device will shut down automatically when not in use, so it's both safe to use and environmentally friendly.

* The GDM10 offers whisper-quiet operation to reduce the amount of noise in your office.

* The unit has casters on the bottom so you can wheel it around the office. Casters are a great inclusion especially since the device weighs almost 80 pounds and some people might find it difficult to move.

* GBC offers some of the best warranties in the business, and it definitely does so for this product. The company will give you two years of on-site protection anywhere in the United States, and there is also a limited one-year warranty on the machine's cutting head.

Weaknesses:

* Although this machine offers a really phenomenal level of security, it's not recommended for the destruction of classified documents, such as government reports. However, it is still well-suited for the destruction of everyday personal and business documents, as well as papers containing financial data, employee information, and such.

* Ten sheets per pass is a good shredding capacity, but it's not perfect. This machine shouldn't be used for high-volume document destruction. Nor can you use it to get rid of CD's and other electronic media.

* The GDM10 can shred for up to 15 minutes. However, once that time is up, the device needs to rest for 20 minutes before you can resume operation. This could be inconvenient in some circumstances.

* This device is over two feet tall, so you won't be able to store underneath a desk.

Overall, the GBC ShredMaster GDM10 is a bit of a mixed bag. Although the security rating is terrific, the 10-sheet shredding capacity might not be enough for some people. Also, while it's good that the machine has anti-jam features, it's disappointing that you need to let the machine cool off after only 15 minutes of use. That said, if you need a high-security machine, don't need a higher shredding capacity, and can live with the 20-minute lag time, the GDM10 could be a good choice for you.
