subject: James Burns Pb21sp Manual 2:1 Pitch Wire Binding Machine Review [print this page]

The James Burns PB21SP Manual 2:1 Pitch Wire Binding Machine is a low-cost, feature-rich binding system that gives individuals and small organizations the ability to create books in the elegant Wire-O style. We recently examined the various features of the PB21SP and put together a list of its various strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths:

1.) Most of the manual binding machines out there have handles on the right side, which not only leaves lefties out of the loop, it can lead to fatigue on bigger jobs for right handed folks as well. We really liked the D-shaped design of the PB21SP's handle. Not only could the southpaws among us use the machine with ease, we could also use both hands at the same time if we wanted. We just found that to be a nice touch which we can see might lead to greater productivity and less tedium on higher volume productions.

2.) As another plus in the ease of use category, the wire hangers of the PB21SP are located on the front of the machine. This makes the process just a little bit easier and more convenient than it is on a lot of machines that place the wire hangers on the back When you add to that the convenient closing guide, closing adjusters, and the Wire-O size guide, what you have is a nice inexpensive little binding system that should get you through a great many projects with elegance and ease. Just a few of the little touches we appreciated about the PB21SP.

3.) The PB21SP can punch the standard 2:1 patterns (in a round shape), or you can pull any one of its 26 fully selectable pins in order to create a custom punch pattern that is all your own. This can be a great way to add some creativity to the binding process, and to give your books a unique look that is all your own which can really help with branding. This machine is one of the only round hole manual wire binding machines that we have seen.

4.) The PB21SP can close all of the wire sizes, and is especially adept at closing some of the thicker binds, up to 1 1/4 in thickness. You can also utilize the PB21SP's open binding edge and adjustable margin guide to create books that are greater than thirteen inches in length. There simply aren't that many machines on the market at this price point that give you that sort of flexibility.

Weaknesses:

1.) The PB21SP is a very versatile Wire-O binding system that includes some nice features. It is, however, only a manual machine, and as such may not be the best solution for higher volume production environments such as larger businesses, and copy shops and the like. If you are going to need to produce more than just a few books per day, you will probably want to step up to a machine that features an electric punch.

2.) The PB21SP's punching capacity of about 10 pages of 20lb paper is fairly decent, but again, depending on the size and volume of documents that you intend to create, you may be able to find a machine with a higher punching capacity, though likely not one with all of the wire closing capabilities of the PB21SP.
