subject: How Do Massachusetts Marinas Benefit The Economy? [print this page]

A survey was conducted by the Massachusetts Marina Trade Association or MMTA on April 2001. The survey aims to identify how the recreation marinas of the state contribute to its economy in a direct and quantifiable manner. Some of the findings of the survey are stated in this article.

The same survey was conducted by MMTA last 1989 and they concluded that since then, the marina contribution to the economy has significantly increased over the past few years. Currently, there are 1,260 business establishments devoted to servicing the marine industry, the Massachusetts coastline has reached nearly 1,500 miles and there is over 2,700 square mile acres of inland water in the area. There is no doubt that Massachusetts marinas are among those that have the most vibrant economy in the entire United States of America.

Statistics shows that among the rich maritime boaters living in the US, 15% of their spending pattern goes to recreational boating. For estimation purposes, that will roughly give the marine economy of Massachusetts almost $1.5 billion dollars a year. Needless to say, the marine industry in the state is contributing positively to its economy.

MA marina provides more than just a peaceful ambiance for the residents. There are about 5 million residents of Massachusetts and more than 75% of them live near the ocean. All of the boaters have an access to 1,200 fresh and saltwater ramps as well as public access to the states streams, ponds and freshwater lakes.

Security is not an issue at all in MA marinas. The proof is in the number of boaters the state regularly service. During high-season, boaters can go as much as 90,000 on the waterways. There will not be so many boaters in the area if the waters are deemed unsafe. Coast guards regularly patrol the area just to make sure everything is in order.

It is not only the business establishments and the government of the state that benefits from Marinas in MA. The positive impacts are felt by the community as a whole. Studies reveal that for every dollar spent on the marina, 2-3 dollars are consequently pumped into the community due to the multiplier effect.
