subject: Traditional Christmas Decorations Are Perfect For The Holiday Season [print this page] What are traditional Christmas decorations and why do most people choose to use them in their decor for the Christmas season? I know depending on who you ask you will get different answers since we all grew up using different types of decorative items based on our own personal beliefs. Heritage also plays a large part in our choices as well.
For the most part you will recognize most items displayed in the majority of homes you visit. Here are a few specific examples of traditional Christmas decorations you might recognize; Christmas trees or as some people like to call them Tannenbaum, whether it's an artificial tree or a fresh tree you can find this in most people's homes that celebrate Christmas. You may find a newer interpretation of a Christmas tree like colored trees, miniature trees, half trees for small spaces that rest on a wall or upside down trees but for the most part the idea is the same; to be the focal point of your home for the holidays and allow you a space to put the presents while waiting for the big day.
Christmas ornaments have long been fashionable to decorate Christmas trees. Glass bulbs are the traditional choice to adorn your tree. You may choose from clear colored, frosted and even textured balls. As trends usually change you can now find filled glass ornaments, metal, fabric and even plastic. All of these different materials have helped evolve traditional Christmas decorations and ornamental decor.
Green Christmas wreaths have also been a long time traditional decoration, since the early Persian Empire when laurel leaves started being used as wreaths. Early Christians adopted the design and made evergreen wreaths to symbolize everlasting life of Christ's presence. The placement and color of your traditional Christmas decorations wreath is usually on your entryway door to greet guests as they enter your home for the holidays. However, they can be displayed anywhere you can think of. Since times have evolved, the production of different materials make it very easy to find faux wreaths made in an assortment of different colors, not just green.
Christmas candles were the traditional Christmas decorations lighting of choice prior to electricity being invented and the soon following development of Christmas lights. Some parts of the world still prefer to use candles to light up their Christmas tree by using small candles held up by counter balance holders. Clip on pendulum candle holders were and still are what some would use to support their candle on branches and catch wax drippings.
Christmas stockings started being used around the time of the third century when the Bishop of Mayra, more commonly known as Saint Nicholas, as legend has it, would leave gifts in the socks of children. And as the legend has evolved over time and spread all over the world, stockings started to get hung in homes over fireplace mantles and left out for Santa Claus to fill as he came down the chimney for children to enjoy prior to opening up their presents under the Christmas tree.
