The official authorities assured SME handloom units that handlooms will not be converted into powerlooms.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Panabaaka Lakshmi, minister of state for textiles, said, Handloom units must focus on introducing innovative designs, which cannot be replicated by powerlooms. They should also avail the benefits of various schemes as initiated by the government in the recent past in order to develop their capacities.
Highlighting upon the initiatives undertaken by the Central government, Ms Lakshmi stated that the state governments have been receiving adequate funding assistance from the Union government since long for ensuring proper implementation of various schemes for the handloom sector.
Government has designed various schemes in the recent past, which are aimed at helping weavers enhance production and improve workers income and social economic status by providing them skill upgradation, infrastructure and input supply support, said Gurpreet Singh, proprietor of Punjab Handlooms, a small-sized handloom store in Kolkata.
The implementation of other schemes such as the integrated handlooms development is also expected to pave the way for higher development of SME handloom units.
