If you like traveling by train, it's a good time to own a Nintendo DS. At least if you like to travel on a virtual train: we already know with Spirit Tracks, Link will be trading in his ship for a steam-powered locomotive, and it looks like Professor Layton will be hopping on board also, starting this August.

So I might be exaggerating a little with the train thing, but I'm not exaggerating when I say that Layton (and puzzle) fans have something to look forward to in about a month: the second game in the Professor Layton series, titled Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box here in the US, is finally getting its North American release.

As in the first game, you will play as Layton and his helpful sidekick, Luke, navigating your way through puzzles (150 this time, over the original's 100), trying to solve the mystery of what happened to Layton's mentor, Dr. Shraeder. As the title suggests, the adventure's focus is the Elysian Box, rumored to kill any who open it.

This second game will include more voice-acting than the original title, although still be prepared to read through most interactions with characters (and of course, the puzzles!), as voice will be reserved for important cutscenes.

Again, as in The Curious Village, puzzlers can get their fill even after they complete the main story, with up to 33 weekly downloadable puzzles, rounding out the total to nearly 200 brainteasers.

Fans familiar with the series will find the Professor's trunk, where essential mysteries and other mini-game puzzles are located, although this time around, expect to find a hamster instead of the inn. Perhaps Luke's next favorite thing to puzzles is animals? Of course, like its predecessor, unraveling all the little mysteries is most of the fun, so you'll have to play to find out!

Word on the street is pre-orders are highly recommended for this title, as the original tended to be sold out in its first run. The game hits shelves August 24, so if you haven't played (or finished) the original, you still have a little time.
