subject: Keeping Holiday Travel Calm [print this page] Travel around this holiday season with children in tow is supposed to be fun, right? You can make sure it is, by leaving behind the fast pace and panic of the season and simply enjoying it.
Include in your plans a variety of fun and relaxing things for both you and the kids to do. Find a Christmas village, or take some time out of your schedule to let the kids visit Santa in a new town. Give them some extra travel money to use to buy gifts and buy themselves souvenirs from the trip if youre able to do so. And dont forget to allow the kids to bring their treasured comfort and entertainment items for those days which arent packed with activities.
There are two big concerns when traveling around the holidays? The first is the traveling in itself. Its not always your own driving you need to worry about, but that of the others on the road. Its not always your baggage which holds up the lines at the airport, but it happens. The second concern is often getting everyones gifts. To save yourself the hustle and panic in the stores, try getting all your shopping done early.
If you want to hide any gifts from your own family, a good suggestion might be to place them in a large garbage bag, and pack them in the trunk before the kids start bringing their luggage outside. An easy way to avoid this bag being discovered is by declaring how Dad is the only one who can get all of those bags in the trunk properly. Just leave your bags beside the car. It worked for our family for years!
This is supposed to be a joyous holiday excursion, so do your best to keep focused on that goal. Things will seem to get a little crazy and hectic while youre traveling with kids over the holidays, but traveling doesnt last forever, and the celebrations and visiting family will be happening soon enough.
