subject: My Mangosteen Memories of Thailand [print this page] Then there was the time I bough a freshly ripe crimson red (a sign of peak condition) bunch of stringed mangosteens in Chiang Mai. As I sat on a bench outside a bus office waiting for a reservation confirmation, I plucked my thumb into one of the husks. To my horror dozens of huge black ants instantaneously rushed out, fleeing along all avenues- namely my arm and jeans. Howling, I leapt up and ran down the street, whisking them away in terror. Luckily, they weren't stinging ants or anything, and they were probably just as terrified of me as I was of them.
