What Are The American Buffalos?

Collecting coins is a hobby suitable for those who have the patience to organize and display their collection in the best form and who have the money to increase their collection by adding valuable items to it. Gold coins are a good investment not only for them but also for those who wish to protect their fortune from the economical fluctuations. Pure gold is fascinating and profitable for these two categories.

The Chinese coin called the Giant Panda is a very good example of what they are searching for . Having a 99.9% purity and an attractive design this coin is a very important item in personal collections. The fact that the United States could only offer the American Gold Eagle with a 91.67% purity was not satisfying for gold buyers. The United States Government offered the public in 2006 the first American 24 karat gold coin.

The first American Buffalo edition consisted of coins weighing around 31g and having a face value of $50. This value was not the price offered by collectors to purchase it. The price is much higher because there was a mintage limit of 300000 pieces and because of the scarcity of gold in the United States. Later on in 2008 the US Mint also issued fractions of this coin having face values of $25, $10 and $5.

The American Bison whose image is on the back of the coin inspired the name because it is generally known as buffalo. On the other side is depicted the portrait of a proud Native American. His face is a combination between those of three American Indian chiefs who were willing to pose for the designer back in 1913. Originally these pictures were imprinted on the Indian Head nickel. These pictures were highly admired throughout the years and considered to be the most beautiful design of an American coin.

The persons who want to buy gold bullion have the opportunity to add to their collection the American Buffalo gold coin. They can be sure of the increased level of purity of the metal and they can enjoy watching the beautifully designed images reminding of cultural aspects of American history. The mint decided to imprint the legal value of the coin under the picture of the buffalo, and the word "Liberty" on the front with the portrait of the Native American.
