Tourism In Kenya - A Brief Look At The Major Attractions

Kenya is an eastern African country surrounded by five countries namely; Ethiopia, On North of Kenya, Somalia on the East, Uganda borders Kenya to the west, Sudan to the northwest while Tanzania borders her to the south. Kenya has three major cities namely Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu with Nairobi being the capital city of the country. Nairobi is a multicultural as well as a cosmopolitan city with many immigrants from various countries around the world.

There are many areas of attraction in Kenya. Though not a prime tourist attraction site, Nairobi has highly boosted tourism in Kenya. There are various destinations in the city that attract both the international and the local visitors. The most famous is the Nairobi National park, which is the home of many giraffes and lions as well as other animals. It is strategically located in the suburb of the city, which gives many visitors easy access. This is a unique destination since, it is the only game reserve of its nature to border a city the world over. This park is also home to over four hundred different species of birds. This city also hosts several museums, for instance, the Bomas of Kenya, the Karen Museums and the Nairobi Railways museum.

Another city to consider when considering tourism in Kenya is Mombasa, the home of the famous Fort Jesus, which was built by the Portuguese. This is the second largest town in Kenya and is located on an island along the Indian Ocean. It is connected to the main land by bridges and ferries. The old town which has lots of old architectural designs by the Islam community is a major tourist attraction in this city. Kenya is believed to have the most beautiful beaches and as such Mombasa houses them all. When one is discussing tourism in Kenya they must not forget the old town of Lamu which has many traditional sites. Lamu is an island that also serves as a tourist attraction along the coast.

The Great Rift Valley which cuts across Kenya is yet another tourist attraction. It is located in the rift valley province the largest province in the country. There are several lakes on the bed of the valley namely Turkana, Elementaita, Bogoria, Baringo and Natron. The home of the flamingos, Lake Nakuru is also situated in the Valley.
