subject: What Small Business Owners Are Missing When it Comes to Website Design [print this page] Author: Evan Ifeanyi Author: Evan Ifeanyi
There was a time as a small business owner when I looked at my website and wondered what good was it if I didn't get traffic to it. It was at this time when I took it upon myself to teach myself about how to get traffic to my website. I must have spent hundreds of dollars at that time reading about the latest gimmicks on how to get traffic onto my website.
Long story short I was able to find out what i was doing wrong, and correct my mistakes, but I wondered...How many other small business owners have websites that don't bear fruit? My guess was that there are many of you who were in the same position that I was in, and this is what many small business owners are missing...
A website that gets created, but receives virtually no traffic is as good as a wet sock in the snow. The reason we all have websites (businesses for the most part)is to get people onto our website so that we can perhaps provide our services to them. It would be like buying a store front that is a condemned building - no one will visit you there.
So what are we to do to help get visitors onto our website?
The answer is what many website owners have yet to fully understand.
You must use practices that will get your website some reputation on the internet. Whether it be article backlinks such as this (see my link at the bottom here?), blog commenting (most blogs allow you leave links), or also submitting to reputable website directories you must build backlinks.
I could go on further. My main point - Anything that will help build your backlink count (the links that point to your website) will help you a great deal in your goal to get visitors. Just make sure they come from websites with good standing with search engines.
This is where some of us stray. You see, if we are not careful in where we get our backlinks from we may be working backwards. If the site does not have good standing in the search engines it's simply no good. A website's "Google Page Rank" is a safe indicator whether a site is viewed well by Google, and possibly by many other search engines.
I would stay away from so called "Black Hat" strategies as many would say that their success is short lived. You want legitimate links from great resourceful websites so that you are almost guaranteed that they won't be discounted anytime soon. Get it?
Even if you set a goal of getting 5 back links a day for 5 days a week. Those links will add up, and one day you'll look back to find that your hard work is showing you results in the form of visitors. But it starts with backlinks.
This is just one piece to the overall "traffic getting puzzle" though. For now just remember a website with no traffic profits the business owner nothing, and backlinks help in this regard.About the Author:
