subject: Conversational Hypnosis: Is There Any Money In It? [print this page]

Conversational hypnosis can be used for a variety of applications. Trainers, public speakers, business executives and psychologists are just a few of the people that have learned to use conversational hypnosis to benefit of both themselves and the people they work or do business with.

Conversational hypnosis is particularly useful for 'real world' situations because you don't need a special environment or set of circumstances to make it work. Conversational hypnosis is based upon the principle of placing the person you are talking to in a highly suggestible trance like state simply through specialised conversational techniques. Once in this state the hypnotist is able to implant suggestions that will actually alter their thoughts or behaviours. This has even more impact, and is consequently more effective, than other forms of hypnosis because it occurs entirely without the awareness of the subject. Consequently they don't even question why their behaviour or ideas have changes and simply feel they have started thinking about things in a new way.

Thats all very well of course but why do so many people want to learn the technique and what possible benefit could it have for you in your private or your business life?

Firstly, lets be honest, there are probably quite a few devotees of conversational hypnosis who rely upon the techniques theyve learnt to compensate for social inadequacies or difficulties in building relationships. This probably indicates that they have failed to recognise, or choose to ignore, the true value of conversational hypnosis. Certainly its value in the treatment of individuals who suffer the effects of lifelong problematic behaviours such as gambling or food addictions is well known. However there are also an increasing number of people who are realising the economic potential of conversational hypnosis as well.

Stage hypnotists, magicians, spurious psychics and so called clairvoyants have exploited conversational hypnosis for their own financial benefit for years. However only a very small minority of these individuals make a living using their skills in this way and the vast majority are more like hobbyists than professionals. In contrast to this a growing number of people in the business community are beginning to recognise the massive financial potential of conversational hypnosis.

Increasingly advertisers are able to use modern media to employ conversational hypnosis techniques in their marketing campaigns. The potential value of being able to implant product imagery and suggested buying behaviour directly into the consumers subconscious is a tantalising prospect for marketers and advertisers. In essence conversational hypnosis is about suggesting a certain behaviour to the subject. Similarly advertising is about suggesting that behaviour should be that you purchase a given product. The correlation is obvious and many advertisers are already using conversational hypnosis processes in their advertising.

Conversational hypnosis technique is often used in what is referred to as the subliminal cut. There are some famous examples of adverts that employ this method, which somewhat surprisingly, remains entirely legal. Both Cadburys drumming Gorilla, which was not only the most popular video on Youtube in 2007 but also saw their overall market share increase by 30%, and Guiness adverts, which have dramatically improved both their brand image and sales figures at a time when other manufacturers are seeing their profits dwindle, use the subliminal cut.

If it is fairly obvious that advertisers would utilise conversational hypnosis techniques perhaps their use by buyers and contract negotiators is less so. However, if figures are to be believed, the use of conversational hypnosis in the corporate world is increasing rapidly. Clearly you will be pretty hard pressed to find a business executive that will admit to using hypnosis to aid their negotiations. Nonetheless in 2005 US businesses spent over $178M on so called negotiation hypnosis training, by 2009 that figure had increased to $290M. (American Institute of Fiscal Studies).

For some this has also created a new and extremely lucrative market in Conversational Hypnosis training. Hitherto this has been affordable only by larger organisations. However the recent emergence of high quality online training has made conversational hypnosis an affordable skill for many to learn.
