Swim In Style...whether In One Piece Or In Two Piece

Swimsuits come in various shapes & styles to suit differing needs of consumers such as an amateur swimmer, a professional swimmer, the first timer etc. Heres a little bit on what these swim suits can be broadly classified in to a one-piece swimsuit and a two-piece swimsuit popularly known the world over as the bikini.

The one-piece swimsuit is a more modest form of swimwear typically worn by women who prefer their torso being covered. It is a skin-tight swimwear mostly worn when swimming in the sea or for sea beachside activities such as sun-bathing.

The fact is that before the actual bikini came in to use, all swimwear were single piece with even men getting in to such swimwear that covered their entire torso.

The one-piece swimsuit has some variants as well. The most commonly seen variant is the maillot or tank suit that looks like a bodysuit. Then there are the halter neck and plunge front varieties that are available as well. Other styles of one-piece swimsuits are the wrap-around, bandeau and pretzel styles.

Of late, professional swimmers have started using shoulder strap varieties of one-piece swimsuits such as the racerback, fastback and flyback styles. The latest trend in the space of one-piece swimsuits however is the bodyskin that covers the entire torso, arms & legs; not to give a modest look but to reduce friction through the water for professional swimmers to swim faster & better. Such suits are designed to cut through the water resistance just like fish or shark skin.

A bikini or a two-piece swim suit is meant for use by women and has two parts; one covers breasts and other covers the groin. A bikini is also worn in extremely hot weather apart from being worn during swimming. The shape of a bikini resembles womens lingerie, the lower piece ranging from the revealing cuts to the somewhat modest square-cuts in their shape & design.

The modern day bikini was actually invented by a Frenchman Louis Reard in 1946 and he named his creation after Bikini Atoll; which was the site of Operation Crossroads nuclear tests. The bikini is regarded as the most admired womens wear around the world. According to one French fashion historian; Olivier Saillard, The emancipation of swimwear has always been linked to the emancipation of women." In fact till the mid of 2000s bikini business had been more than a USD 800 million industry which was reported by NPD Group, which is a retail and consumer information company. In fact the bikini is also credited with the start of associated businesses like bikini wax and sun tanning industries.
