subject: Information About Purchasing Pc Games [print this page]

The PC games industry is a thriving enterprise nowadays. Computers are more affordable, and more people are buying. Owners will naturally use their PC for recreation also, and will want to be able play word games, arcade games, card games and role-playing games both online and offline.

People can buy games for the PC from gaming stores and electronics stores. The game package includes the ESRB ("Entertainment Software Rating Board") rating at the front and back. The rating has two parts. The first part indicates the age appropriateness of the game, while the second part contains descriptions of game elements that may be of interest or concern.

For instance, an EC (Early Childhood) rating is given to PC games that are appropriate for children 3 years and older. There are no unsuitable material or content. Parents and anyone buying games for minors will find the ESRB a good guide on deciding which games are appropriate for the recipient.

Games with prolonged scenes of intense violence, sexual content and nudity are given an AO (Adult Only) rating, and are meant to be played by persons 18 years or older. There are very few games of this nature, since almost all games fall between the EC and AO category. Other ESRB ratings include E (Everyone), T (Teen) and M (Mature), each roughly corresponding to an age group.

People can skip going to stores and instead, go online to get PC games that are directly downloadable to their machine. There are no packaging and delivery costs, so buyers can expect lower prices. These games are usually full versions of the ones played online in gaming sites like Yahoo!Games. The downloadable versions can be played offline and have more game levels, features and richer graphics.

Some are stand-alone versions of online tournament-style games. This means that, these games are normally played online against other virtual players, with a downloadable version that can be played even without Internet access. Casino games are of this type.

There are some games, however, that cannot be played online and are available only as downloadable free trials or outright full version purchases. The free trials typically last only an hour. This means that, after one hour of cumulative play, the game is disabled, and the only way the user can play the game again is to enter a valid registration key (which is provided with the purchase).

Whether buying downloadable games or games from a physical store, it is always advisable to use good judgment in deciding if the game is appropriate for intended users or not. ESRB ratings are available for store-bought games, but buyer discretion is needed for games downloaded from the Internet. By playing only age-appropriate games, people can get the maximum benefit and enjoyment of playing games on their PC.
