subject: Web Host Reviews - Picking A Winning Web Host [print this page]

As hosting companies continue to pop up at an astronomical rate, web host reviews appear on every corner of the internet. There are entire websites devoted to hosting reviews and too many lists of top ten web hosting sites to count (not to mention, they are all different). How do you sort through all this madness? First, you need to know the criteria on which the reviewers are basing their information. Some review sites are based in actual customer reviews while others are comparisons of feature categories.

For instance, a top ten list on a web host reviews page might judge companies according to key features, uptime, reliability, connection speed, customer support, user-friendliness, price value, hosting awards, or more. If you are looking for a host site, don't rely too heavily on these, because these kinds of lists vary greatly and companies can buy their way onto many of them. The list creator might be paid to advertise the host companies on their lists; after all they have to make money to justify keeping that webpage up, right? Even if they are honest, the information for each of their judging categories is probably received from the companies' websites and can be exaggerated or stated in a misleading way.

Actual customer reviews are a more reliable source of information on a company. Although these can be tricky too because company employees or rewarded customers can skew the comments to the positive. To be fair, this probably only balances the point of view due to a natural tendency to the negative. The displeased customer is much more likely to give a poor review than the happy one is to write a comment at all. Checking out several open forum sites with web host reviews can help bring the overall picture of a host business into focus.

Further investigation might lead you to the client forums on the host site itself. Find out what issues customers keep bringing up and how the staff deals with them. If there is nothing negative in the forums, beware. A company who deletes all its negative customer feedback probably has something to hide. All in all, web host reviews can tell you quite a bit about the hosting site by what they say, don't say, and how the company responds to them. If you are still on the fence about a company, type up an email with some questions before you sign on with them. If they are friendly, responsive and quick with their reply, you probably have a winner.
