November to April are the months to be in Kata if you prefer to snorkel, dive or swim in its tranquil clear blue waters. At this time of the year, the sea is deliciously warm and flat with nary a ripple. May to October are the months great for surfing as the waters of Kata could be a little rough due to the south-west monsoon in the region. Red flags are up along the beach front when the beach is not safe. The unfortunate incident of December 2004 prompted the local authorities to stringent with the beach"s safety measures.
Kata beach offers a variety of water sports for newbie and seasoned enthusiasts. Banana boat ride is very popular. Enthusiasts (4-8) tightly grip the "banana" inflatable as they try not to fall off as a speedboat zigzags through the water towing the banana boat. Wakeboarding is a great way to burn calories as you throw, run after and jump in the wakeboard. For those who want to explore the islets in and around the Kata beach, you can rent a jet ski or kayak. If you want to see the beach at a different perspective, you can try parasailing to have a clear unobstructed bird"s eye view of the whole area.
For those who prefer quiet and restful activities, there are sunbeds the length of the beach where you can laze around and soak in the view. Up the beach front is an area shaded by trees where hammocks are available. Gently swing yourself to sleep or arrange for one of those Thai massages for a real relaxing activity. Small children will enjoy the southern end of the beach as it is mostly shaded and close to amenities.
The south end also has the best surfing area this side of Phuket making Kata Beach quite busy during the surfing season. The swells of the Andaman Sea can reach up to 2 meters and are fast but not as furious. The waves are manageable but challenging enough that an annual Phuket Surfing Contest is held in Kata Beach. In 2010 the competition will run from August 31 to September 2. Surf"s up!, even for small kids. The waves near the shore are gentler and therefore perfect for kids using boogie boards. Rentals and instructors are available along the beach.
