subject: What Does It Take To Be A Productive Medical Transcriptionist? [print this page] Your ability to be productive is highly valuable to your employer when you work as a medical transcriptionist. It's valuable to you as well, since most at home transcriptionists are paid on production. Being more productive means earning more money.
How can you be as productive as possible while maintaining your accuracy?
Be Well Trained in Medical Transcription
The better the training you get as a medical transcription student, the more productive you will be even in your early days in a real job. Knowing your stuff means you don't have to look as much information up.
In your early days as working medical transcriptionist, one of the biggest things that will slow you down will be the doctors themselves. The many different accents and dictation styles can only be taught so well in even the best of courses.
Use Medical Word Expansion Software
Medical word expansion software is an amazing tool for increasing your productivity. Some employers have it included in their transcription software, but you can also buy your own.
This tool takes a few letters you type in and comes out with a word, phrase or even a commonly used paragraph where you have only a few blanks to fill in. It takes time to learn to use this software well, but once you have it, you'll dislike working without it. It makes life much simpler.
Have a Comfortable, Quiet Work Space
You should have a work space that is conducive to getting work done, as free from distractions as is possible. Having a door you can close is a good idea not only for getting that quiet, but also as a step in preserving patient privacy.
You will need a good, comfortable office chair with ergonomic features. A good chair is a big help in being able to sit and transcribe during your work hours. It will help you to sit in an ergonomically correct position, which is better for you in the long run.
Your computer desk should allow your keyboard to be near your lap and your monitor at a comfortable level for your eyes. You should not be looking up at your monitor.
Your office should have a space near or on your desk for any printed reference materials you need. You can find a lot of reference materials online, but sometimes there's no replacement for a printed book.
Hard Work
It doesn't matter how well you're trained as a medical transcriptionist if you don't work hard at the job. Keep your focus on the job at hand. It may be frustrating at first to get caught on unfamiliar terminology that takes time to look up, but that's all a part of the learning curve, and you will get better if you keep working on it.
