Sierra Leone: One Country, One People?

Sierra Leone, a country of emphatic beauty, is not moving in the right direction in spite of its sad past of mismanagement and war. It has always had a leadership that is not alert in its commitment to provide credible services and programmes.

It is a land of exquisite beauty and abundant wealth in its fields and waters. But, given its inhabitants' ability to falter, the country is struggling to keep a firm grip on its natural resources. When a government neglects to learn from previous mistakes and the citizens care less about politicians' public record, there is bound to be inertia and perfidiousness in the society.

Many Sierra Leonean politicians hail from poor hamlets and towns but sadly, nothing is being done to uplift the massive poverty in their areas. If universal values hinge on the rights to life, liberty and freedom, then in Sierra Leone, the framework which creates the necessary balance has been distorted and too often the people fall victim to naked political bullying.

Experts say the world has changed its old face in every respect. The concepts of good governance and democracy allow the principles of care and assistance, the drive to fight against injustice and to promote the interests of people who experience disadvantages in society. However, an examination of the realities in Sierra Leone reveals a disturbing trend.

Rather than using tribal bonds to create despair in our land, Sierra Leoneans need to involve themselves in dialogue and establish some level of consensus, co-existence, tolerance and mutual cooperation to re-ignite and re-establish sustainable development in the country.

It is wrong to uphold our cultural identities with inability to demonstrate love. There has to be a concerted effort by all and sundry to adopt new, sustainable and patriotic measures to defend the fundamental rights of all Sierra Leoneans.
