Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers Tickets - Tour Dates Announced For A Classic Rocker

The cover of Tom Petty's debut album is pretty straightforward: Smoke, a black leather jacket, and a slyly grinning Petty, promising a pure rock and roll inside. That record went on to sell a lot of copies, and quickly made Petty and his backing band, The Heartbreakers, a national sensation. It was the birth of one of rock's most successful careers, and needless to say, Petty and company are still completely deserving of that rock and roll image.

Hundreds of thousands of fans across the United States are about to prove they agree. With Petty heading back out on tour, his fans are eagerly preparing for him to show up in their cities with a host of new songs (and, hopefully some old classics). Petty has a new record coming out called Mojo, and is expected to be one of the top touring acts of the year. It's not just that he's a popular artist. It's that he hasn't toured in years, and besides that, this epically sprawling tour will include dates with a who's who of opening acts.

The opening acts include:

Joe Cocker: One of the classic performers from the '60s, and well remembered for playing at Woodstock, Joe Cocker is going to be a favorite for a lot of the older fans in the audience. If you've never seen the guy play live, then you've been missing out.

Crosby, Stills and Nash: No introduction should be required for this band. David Crosby, David Stills and Stephen Nash are responsible for some of the quintessential folk and rock from the '60s. Don't miss out on their classic songs when they open for Petty.

Drive-By Truckers: The Drive-By Truckers play Southern-fried rock inspired by Lynyrd Skynyrd and their own mixed bag of musical heroes, but have also earned a steady following among indie-rock listeners. They're a little bit alternative, a little bit good ole' boy rock, but definitely talented and worth checking out.

ZZ Top: ZZ Top is a heavier act, known for their tall hats, black clothes and bushy facial hair. They look like the bad boys of the Amish part of town-the ones that have no scruples about playing electric guitar with the volume turned up. They will appear with Petty at Milwaukee's SummerFest concert.

Needless to say, that's quite a crew for Petty to be leading. Not that he needs it-on his own, the guy's live shows are enough to draw in fans from all over. Earlier this year, Tom Petty released a boxed set called the Live Anthology, a collection live tracks from the Heartbreakers storied career. It sold in record numbers, and critically was lauded for showing off the band's strength as a live act. Needless to say, you don't want to miss them when they head out on this tour and come to your town.
