subject: What Is Corporate Social Responsibility? A Brief Overview [print this page]

Corporate Social Responsibility is a concept introduced by bigger corporations. In the earlier days of the corporations, people use to get affected by the actions of the corporations a lot. These problems not only include breaking of the law but also other issues which directly affected the communities surrounding the bigger corporations. People started complaining for the careless and unchanging attitude of the bigger corporations that was seriously affecting their lives. These chaoses lead to creation of a new department in bigger organizations, known as the CSR department. Corporate Social Responsibility Departments had been initially incorporated to deal with all these rising issues. Later on these CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) departments started playing bigger roles in the communities.

There are many CSR initiatives running around the world representing the different corporations working across the globe. Earlier the purpose of the CSR department was totally different. It was not intended to bring up the name of the company. It was one of the most hated and difficult departments of the corporation to be in. Its major task was of fire fighting and resolving court issues. Employees in the CSR were thought to be amongst the most unfortunate of the employees working for the organization. Way back then, no one had ever thought in his wildest what a corporation will be doing through CSR.

Now CSR departments are being used though for the same purpose, but the model is totally different. Today CSR departments of responsible organizations are not sitting behind and waiting for the things to get worse. They are very proactive in what they do. They are always up and looking for any unseen situation arising out of the corporations actions that might create problems for the communities with which their corporation works. Corporations with the time have realized their responsibilities. They can be seen playing very vital roles in the betterment of the communities with which they work. Some of the corporations offer education to the communities. Other organizations install recycling plants to minimize the damage that might be caused by their business operations. Corporate Social Responsibility with the time has become an effective way of collaboration between the communities and the corporations. In this way both cannot only convey their reservations but also build better integrated environments for each other to work. CSR department evolution took many turns the past. They have transformed themselves into front desks of businesses open for communities to talk, share, and sort mutual concerns as well as pressing issues.
