subject: Why Choose Herbal Affiliate Programs as Part of Your Web Marketing Business? [print this page]

Perhaps the single most important thing to any person is their health, and the health and wellbeing of their family. This could explain why the healthcare industry accounts for approximately 10% of the GDP of most industrialized nations, and why this figure is set to grow as new treatments and therapies become available.

But of course, most people don't just go to see their doctor when they feel ill; millions of us everyday consume vitamins, supplements, and other general and alternative' health related products, and in recent years our global consumption of these products has increased, year on year.

This trend provides great opportunities both for vendors and affiliates alike, and is likely to ensure that any affiliate who chooses to promote health related products as part of their portfolio (and is able to do so successfully) will find the natural health niche very lucrative indeed, and for a variety of reasons.

Many unscrupulous web marketers earn money by promoting illegal (or at least highly questionable) products such as fake prescription drugs, or prescription drugs produced by unregulated laboratories. Whilst purporting to save consumers money, these drugs are more likely in fact to cause harm, and we would urge any web marketer to give these products a very wide berth.

It is far better to promote natural remedies such as herbal supplements that not only benefit from little or no regulation, but are unlikely ever to cause physical harm, even on those occasions when they do little or no good.

Herbal medicine has been with us for millennia, and indeed represents our earliest attempt at medicine. For decades during the last century (at least in Western nations) the use of herbs as everyday treatments declined as modern medical science brought us ever more effective cures.

Perhaps paradoxically, in the last twenty years or so herbal and alternative remedies have once again become popular. The common perception (and indeed the reason cited most often by herbalists) is that people are somehow afraid or wary of using synthetic chemicals, or have a thorough dislike of big pharma' corporations and would prefer natural' remedies such as herbs instead. Whilst this statement may be true of a few naf's and optimists, the reasons for herbalism's recent renaissance have more to do with the combination of clever marketing by vendors, celebrity endorsement, and the increasing amount of medical research into the effects of compounds extracted from herbs.

As affiliate marketers, we should be attracted to this increasing public interest in herbal medicine by several factors. Firstly, there is a good selection of reputable vendors with a decent online presence and well established affiliate programs. Secondly, the relatively low costs associated with procuring ingredients and producing supplements (at least in bulk) mean that vendors are able to offer affiliates very attractive commission rates typically 25-40%, with many offering two-tier programs paying up to 10% commission on referral sales. Thirdly, this market is expanding and by no means saturated, meaning that experienced affiliate marketers are likely to find making money with herbal affiliate programs rather easy.
