Planning A Driving Trip To The Top End

Most Australians feel the need to travel to the top end at least once in their life. Provided you have the right car insurance policy in place, there is no reason why you should not visit some of the more remote areas of Australia, including the Northern Territory. Some of Australia's most spectacular scenery is located here and almost every visitor to the region has a wonderful story to relate.

The top end is quintessential Australian territory, with its images of remote locations, dusty rocky landscapes dotted with spectacular hidden waterfalls, almost like oases in a desert.

It is in these regions that you can come to understand the stark beauty of the Australia outback as well as experience the spiritual side of our aboriginal heritage by immersing yourself in the solitude of a spectacular sunset or an inspiring sunrise. The colour changes, the vast emptiness and the ethereal experience will stay with you forever.

Although many Australians choose to take a guided coach tour, with some careful planning is easy to take a self drive holiday to many parts of the top end. Here are a few to whet your appetite.
Planning A Driving Trip To The Top End

Kakadu National Park. It is easy to incorporate a two-day trip from Darwin to the Kakadu National Park. In a few short hours you can be enjoying lunch at the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre. From here you can join the Yellow Water Billabong Cruise we will be able to see saltwater crocodiles cruising the waters observing you with their periscope eyes! Even though you may call this a self drive holiday, there are some things you need to do as part of a group tour! After camping overnight you can travel the next morning to Ubirr and go for a short walk where you will witness some wonderful aboriginal rock art and some absolutely stunning country as you look across the plain to Cannon Hill. If you have the resources available to you, you can take a flight over the Arnhem Land Escarpment, a truly unbelievable experience

Having finished your visit to Kakadu it is now time to drive the southern half of Kakadu at Litchfield. There are spectacular waterfalls and more scenery as you travel this well worn track for the next three or four hours. After an overnight sleep at the Gaguju Lodge is time to drive north to the township of Batchelor and the Litchfield National Park. It is safe to swim at some of the waterholes here and after a long dusty trip nothing can be more enjoyable.

The full round-trip can take as long as five days if you wish and this means you can spend at least half a day in each location where you can really soak up the atmosphere. It is said that you need time alone in some of the ravines and gorges you will find in this remarkable area to really come to grips with what the Australia outback really means.

Once again, make sure you have a good car insurance policy and that you have had your vehicle serviced before starting your trip.
