Freelance Copywriting: Start A Copywriting Business Today

There may be no better time to start a freelance copywriting service that now, even in our current economic state. You can start copywriting in your spare time, and can even write from home. This makes copywriting an excellent home business. Even if you lose your job, you will already be on your way to a new career.

Economic conditions do not affect copywriting. People will still be buying and selling products, whether the economy is good or not. And as long as buyers and sellers come together, copywriters will be necessary.

Here are three simple steps to starting your own recession-proof copywriting business in your spare time.

1. Build your portfolio. Any time you meet with a potential client to discuss your freelance copywriting service, they will want to see some previous work. So you should always have writing samples on hand to share with them. Any copywriting you have done in the past can be used as samples. But how do you handle it if you have no samples?

You've got two choices: you can create sample advertisements, press releases, or Web sales pages for products purely as an exercise to get content for your portfolio, or you can write copy for local organizations and charities.

Local schools and charities often need copywriting services, such as advertisements, flyers, and newsletters. However, they are not always able to pay. You can help out by volunteering your services. This will give you samples for your portfolio, as well as the experience of working with a client.

2. Promote your copywriting services, online and offline, and get your first clients. Create a Web site so that you have somewhere to direct people so they can view your portfolio. Then promote your services in ways which are comfortable for you. If you have a little capital to invest, you can take out advertising in local newspapers, or on Web sites.

3. Approach local agencies for copywriting jobs: local is best when you're a new copywriter. These agencies could include advertising agencies, graphic design agencies and management agencies. An agency may not have any work for you at the moment, but agencies are getting new contracts all the time, and they're happy to sub-contract work. Establishing connections with local businesses and agencies will form the bedrock of your new copywriting services business for years to come.

Keep these three steps in mind as you start your freelance copywriting career; your new career is recession-proof and offers a high potential for income.
