You could be picking up grandma that just had a problem with her car or it could be a serial killer just lying in wait for a good hearted person to come along.
Even if you are the type that would not pick up a stranger and allow them to ride in your car, there are plenty of other ways that a criminal can manage to attack you when you are out on the road. Some criminals even pose as a police officer that will pull you over in order to get you to stop. There are criminals that hang around at gas stations and they can get into your vehicle or threaten you at gun point that way. Then, you could be the one to break down on the highway and have an evil doer stop under the guise of helping you.
Any of these situations could easily happen when you travel in a car. Any crook might also have a gun on them, but many do not and will try to threaten you with a knife or even a metal pipe. If you are the only one with a gun, the odds are more in your favor. Even if they do have a gun, but don't know that you do, you still have a better chance of being able to get away from them if you did not have a gun at all. Some people only feel safe when they have their gun on their person because having it locked away in the glove box takes more time to get to it if you need it. A concealed carry purse might be a good option for a woman and a guy might like the idea of having a shoulder holster to make getting you gun very fast.
When you must stop your car for to get gas, always turn it off and lock it and take your keys with you. Never park where you can't see your car and reduce the chance that someone can get in a wait for you. When you are driving down the road, keep your doors locked at all times. Makes sure someone knows that you are traveling and check in with them when you get where you are going so they will know you arrived safely at your destination. It might seem a little silly to take all of these precautions, but there are a lot of people out there that wish they had.
