Dandruff is a commonly found hair problemDandruff is a commonly found hair problem. Many of us suffer from dandruff to some extent. Dandruff is the accumulation of dead skin cells, shed by our body periodically, present on the scalp, sole of feet, etc.

Basically, our body is the host to many microorganisms, such as fungi and bacteria. These microorganism feed on the sebaceous oil produced by our skin glands. The hair scalp is the host to a fungus known as malassezia, a fungus, which feeds on the sebaceous oil in the hair follicles. Dandruff is caused when the malassezia fungus aggravates rapidly increasing the rate of shedding of the dead skin cells, thus irritating the scalp. The process of shedding the dead cells increases the oil clumps and cells together in the form of dandruff.

Having dandruff can become quite embarrassing sometimes, and the worst thing is it can reoccur despite of all your efforts. There is no cure to the dandruff; however, the dermatologists have come up with a number of possible ways to control the dandruff. One of the best solutions to avoid dandruff is, to shampoo your hair everyday. Sometimes, it happens that dandruff becomes stubborn, and no matter how hard you try, you cannot get rid of it. The use of anti-dandruff can be quite helpful. Dandruff control shampoos containing active ingredients such as zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, salicylic acid, etc can prove effective. However, you must change the brands of these dandruff control shampoos regularly, to keep the scalp away from developing immunity against it.

You must shampoo your hair twice, as the first course will clear the dandruff flakes from the scalp and remove the oil buildup in the roots. The second course will let the nutrients absorb in the scalp and will re-moisturize it.

Several homemade remedies will enable you to wash the dandruff flakes away. An effective dandruff control remedy is to mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar in 6 tablespoons of water and massage it gently in the scalp and wrap hair with a towel. Never scratch the dandruff flakes using your fingernails as it may lead to infection.
