The world's favourite ski holiday destinations

While some people take holidays to escape the winter weather, others plan their travels to make the most of the snowy conditions, especially when heading on ski holidays to some of the world's top resorts. From slalom runs to snowboarding and tobogganing, winter sports can be a rare treat to be enjoyed for a few short months a year - so it's important to choose a high quality ski resort to make the most of the opportunity while you can.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a ski resort, perhaps most importantly the quality of the slopes themselves. Large mountains boasting excellent lengths of trails and aprs-ski conditions can set you up for a fantastic ski holiday, but you need to ensure the facilities of your ski resort are up to the same standards as the terrain, to help you stay safe and comfortable during your stay.

Choosing a world-renowned ski resort at a location such as Zermatt, Switzerland or Aspen, Colorado all but guarantees you a high quality stay, but you don't have to rely on the big names to have a great time on your ski break. Indeed, destinations such as Whistler, British Columbia tend to be rated even more highly than Aspen by seasoned ski fans, thanks to the highly developed resort at Whistler-Blackcomb which features high-speed lifts to get skiers of all abilities to slopes ideally suited to their level in no time.

If you're looking for superb skiing in Europe, however, you might want to look towards Chamonix-Mont Blanc in the French Alps, which offers some of the most challenging skiing in the world, including the biggest vertical slope at more than 2,800 metres in height and the longest ski run at a staggering 22 kilometres. That doesn't mean novice skiers will be left out in the cold though, as the region also features slopes ideal for beginners as well as training courses so you can learn to ski like a pro.

Money plays an important role too, of course, especially with the global economy still feeling the effects of the recession, however the stereotype of ski holidays being the domain of the rich and famous has long since faded, with many opportunities available for skiers to enjoy their favourite sports on a tight budget.

Eastern Europe is fast rising in prominence as a favourite destination for skiers east of the Alps, and the influx of budget holidaymakers since 2007 has provided a much-needed boost to the infrastructure of these resorts and their facilities.
