Why Should You Get Online Medical Transcriptionist Training?

One of the first things you have to decide when you want to become a medical transcriptionist is where to get your training. Many people quickly think of the local vocational school or community college. For the most part, I don't consider that a great idea. This is one kind of career training that I suggest getting online.

But why online?

The first reason is simple. You're probably considering medical transcriptionist training because you want to work at home in medical transcription. This means you're probably better off learning it at home. It's more like what you're going to be doing once you land a job.

The second reason is that most of the best medical transcription schools are online. They're the ones with good courses, solid transcription practice and a great reputation with many national transcription companies. That's a huge advantage when it comes to finding that all important but difficult to land first job. You want training that tells employers not to worry about their experience requirements. Your training will suffice.

The third reason is flexibility. You just can't beat a self paced program for flexibility, and most online programs are at least mostly self paced. You don't have to worry about making your life work around class times set by someone else. You just need to make the time to sit down and do the work.

There are disadvantages of course, but they're rather similar to the disadvantages of working at home as a medical transcriptionist. You're going to be dealing with distractions, for example. Working and studying at home aren't easy for everyone, especially if you have young children.

Feelings of isolation can be another issue. It's not as bad as you might think if you consider school forums a place to network with your fellow students.

The need to be highly self motivated can be an advantage or a disadvantage. For the naturally self motivated, it's great. You can work hard and get done as quickly as your schedule and ability to absorb new information and skills allows.

If you're not so self motivated, you're going to have to work harder at getting things done. On the plus side, learning how to manage unsupervised time while you're still learning your transcription skills is a big plus. Study at home and you won't have a teacher demanding assignments on a particular date as much.

No, learning medical transcription online isn't for everyone, but then working at home isn't for everyone either. Think about what you're getting into and why, and make the right decision for you.
