Most people are not even aware that it is possible to get an insurance policy without having a legal driver's license. Some people use an international licence. In some cases, an international identification card and they are allowed to legally drive in their country of origin. They however, might not be allowed to drive in their current state of residence. For them, there are some insurance companies that offer auto insurance without drivers license.

There are also those that own a car, don't have a license, but want to keep up with a valid registration. Some people will operate a car and think that they can not get car insurance because they do not have a driver's license. They also may be under the impression that the premiums would be higher to cover them.

These commonly thought ideas are not the definite truth. It is a bad idea to operate a vehicle if you don't have a license, but there are a lot of different reasons to want to insure the vehicle. There can be several legal reasons why one would need insurance for their automobile and not be in possession of a driver's license.

Different companies have their own guidelines in regards to policy holders that are not licensed. If there were any legal issues involved with a driver having insurance and no driver license, then the responsibility would be on the driver in most cases. There can be severe penalties for being caught driving and not legally licensed.

For those that require auto insurance without a drivers license, there may be several companies in the area that can help. A simple inquiry can be made to the insurance company. Keep in mind, that it is illegal to operate a vehicle without a license in most states. When one is applying for the insurance, they should make sure to be upfront about their current situation and provide any information as to why they are not licensed. If improper information is given, then the company can refuse to honor a claim.
