subject: High BPO Growth Prevents Recession [print this page]

The sustained development of the BPO sector and the high OFW remittances had helped the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to deny the economic downturn of the country. These are means of recuperating the investors' investments. According to BSP, these are the reasons why the economy should stay optimistic and confident that recession will no longer happen in the country. This year, BPO sector will earn 6 billion dollars according to the vision of BSP. Call centers are increasing in Bacolod City, more job openings are provided to its residents. A press conference was conducted recently by Utah-based Focus Pacific Incorporated. They stated their growth and they will employ 165 call center agents. Focus Pacific President and Utah Senator Dan Liljenquist preferred the Philippines rather than India to be their first spot outside US. The reason is that their clients in US are requesting the services of Filipinos particularly those who reside in Bacolod. Clients believe in the quality of work of Filipino agent. Focus Pacific executives commend the City of Bacolod for their open and upright view of the plans for Bacolod could. Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chair of the information and communication committee lead the Bacolod IT Focus Team. Teleperformance is another call center which needs 300 call center agents. The company already announced the hiring last May and it ended last June 30. Qualified applicants will be given high salary, sign on bonus, and a 20% night differential.

Senior Executive Vice President of Cyber City Teleservices said that the Philippines will not be affected by the international financial crisis. If BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) firm in the country shuts down due to international crisis, its employees would be easily adopted by other BPO's. He just added that call center industry in the country needs manpower to excel more. Cyber City and Philippine Council of Students in Intrapreneurship (PCSI), provide students a venue for skills training and development to prepare them for their respective industries after graduation. Through the success of these BPOs in the country, it might be of great help to this international financial crisis.

Call centre managers require graduates who can speak in English fluently and who can keep themselves captivated to their headsets. Due to the economic downturn in United States (where the outsourcing industry's revenue came from), only few potential investors are surveying for outsourcing sites. In spite of this condition, US outsourcing major Convergys declared recently some plans for five new customer contact centres in our country which signifies jobs for 7,000 people. Outsourcing consists of call centres and back-office operations which helped the Philippine economy. In 2006, 160,000 people were employed in a US$2 billion (S$3 billion) business. The business anticipates an increase of 10 percent in the global outsourcing market by 2010 in the Philippines.Based from a report, Philippine outsourcing business should not be affected by global crisis. Costs cutting should be executed in developed markets during global recession; this may result to an increase in the business process outsourcing activities.

Higher growth rates this year is anticipated by the local business process outsourcing (BPO) and software sectors seeing that U.S. companies deploy cost-cutting measures by outsourcing their IT requirements to countries such as the Philippines. Officials from the public and private sectors believed that the tough economic environment is a proof of blessing in disguise for local BPOs and software companies because the industry of Philippine electronics manufacturing is really prevailing from the global financial crisis.
