subject: Don't Start Looking For A Business Before You Find Your Business Idea [print this page] When looking to start a business it is essential that you have some idea of what you would like to do. It is not enough, just to want to work for yourself, as this on its own will lead to desperation. You will more likely be taken in by the gloss and sparkle of a flashy marketing program and end up wasting your money.
Not everybody has a burning desire to follow a particular course, and most people need some inspiration on the way. You must examine your own situation and ask yourself a number of questions. The first of these should be along the lines of:
1. Do I like my current line of work, but want to work for myself?
2. Do I hate my current career, and want something completely different?
If the answer to the first question is yes, then you might have an easier task ahead of you. If you have trained and worked hard to reach your current position but dislike the constraints of working for others, then you should seriously consider continuing your present line of work in your own business before discounting the idea. This would form a sound base for a strong business and might even provide a ready list of contacts for customers to get you started.
If you are looking for a change of direction, you should try to focus your thoughts instead of wandering around various different business ideas looking to see what might interest you. You should ask yourself a number of questions, including:
1. What do I like doing?
2. How would I like to be working?
3. What do I want to achieve from my business?
4. Is this a longer term committment or a short term wage requirement?
By looking at answers to these and other questions you will be able to narrow your thoughts and start formulating some ideas for your new business. Working at home may be attractive, a large income important and working without the distraction of regular staff essential. You might be swayed in the area of working from a computer and using freelance suppliers accessed through the Internet as your work force. The thought of dealing in actual goods might be more attractive than agency or commission work.
If you start with a framework for your business venture you will be better placed to start researching for the details to go with it. It might come down to what specific product you want to sell, in which case Internet research will be focused. It might boil down to what service you want to provide, and researching different consultancies might just spark off the idea that you are looking for.
