subject: 6 Tips to Prepare for Summer when you Own a Dollar Store by:Bob Hamilton [print this page] Many of us long for summer to return each year. The sunshine, warm weather, outdoor activities, vacations and so much more make it a special time of year. For those who operate a dollar store there are certain tasks that must be handled to make the summer selling season a success. These tasks range from preparing for the hot temperatures to ordering the right summertime dollar store merchandise that will add extra sales and profits, and so much more. In this article I present 6 tips to prepare for summer when you own a dollar store.
Tip #1) Make sure the stores air conditioning and refrigeration systems are ready for the heat. Dont wait until the summer scorcher weather hits to make sure your store air conditioning works. What do you do with thousands of melted candy bars and other dollar store merchandise that melts if the air conditioning doesnt work? Write it off as a total loss! The same holds true of refrigeration and freezers. Make sure everything is in top working order. If you own a dollar store your risk isnt only ruined food and lost sales. You also risk waiting in a long line as service personnel try to keep up.
Tip #2) Add sales by extending you store hours during the summer season. If your lease allows there is some sense to reducing store hours during the winter and early spring. However as spring turns to summer be sure to increase store hours to capture those extra early morning and late evening summer sales. While summertime isnt the hottest of selling seasons you should be rewarded for taking this action by extra sales and profits.
Tip #3) Add the best selling summer items to your dollar store merchandise selection. Think about sun, fun, and vacations as you add seasonal merchandise. Many gardeners love working in their yards and gardens. Others take hikes and picnics or trips to rivers or the beach. All of these activities require supplies and you need to have those supplies in-stock. Add to your toy department sales by ordering summer time toys and travel games.
Tip #4) Dont forget to stock up for back to school early. If you own a dollar store dont underestimate the power of back to school sales. Back to school sales can create a huge boost to your July, August and September sales. Be sure to provide all the school supplies required for students from pre-school through college.
Tip #5) Put the finishing touches on Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas buying. Your pre-booked dollar store merchandise for all of these holidays should have been completed already. If not, or if you need some added items, start ordering as soon as possible. In fact your seasonal merchandise should start arriving in August to maximize sales.
Tip #6) Take a little time for yourself. When you own a dollar store it is easy to forget about everything but your business. Dont allow that to happen to you. Dont allow all the dollar store merchandise ordering and display to overcome your time away. Hire a student or two to temporarily fill in as other employees step up and cover for your absence. Plan time off and take it. Enjoy the summertime weather and events. As summer winds down you are entering the busiest selling time of all. Being rested will make the excitement of the fall and winter holidays all that more enjoyable to you and your family when youve had some time together during the summer.
To your dollar store success!
